We need to feast a lot more.

It comes as a surprise to many people that the Bible says a lot more about feasting than fasting. Exodus 12:1–14 is one such place where the LORD establishes an annual feast for his people. This feast is the LORD's Passover, a grateful remembrance of Israel's deliverance from Egypt. The LORD brought judgment upon the hardened people of Egypt by killing all of Egypt's firstborn. But the people of Israel received the mark of the blood of the lamb, which kept them safe from God's judgment.

We understand the meaning of the LORD's Passover. It pointed to Jesus Christ, and his blood which saves us from God's judgment. "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29) "For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed." (1 Corinthians 5:7) And, of course, feasting is still the appropriate response to God's grace.

The Lord's Supper, which we receive every week, is a symbol of that ultimate feast that awaits us in glory. Every Lord's Day we are reminded that the end of our pilgrimage and life of faith is a sumptuous feast. And that feast is itself a synecdoche, representing in one word the world of joy and glory that will be ours.

Then, once a month, we extend that symbol into reality. We sit around the table with our spiritual family. We eat. We laugh. We give thanks. This is exactly how our heavenly Father would have us be. Feast. Rejoice. And look forward with hope for the glory that is before us.
