Psalm 114 is a rousing hymn. In it the psalmist celebrates how God brought his people out of Egypt. "When Israel went out from Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange language, Judah became his sanctuary, Israel his dominion." Egypt was a land of a strange language. The people of Egypt spoke a different language than Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. But the real issue was more than linguistics. The people of Egypt never accepted the children of Israel as their own. The children of Israel were despised in Egypt. The children of Israel were aliens and strangers in Egypt.

But when God brought Israel out of Egypt, he endowed Israel with holiness and distinction. The people of Israel became the Lord's dwelling place and a kingdom of priests. In Egypt the Pharaoh ruled over the people of Israel with a vicious heart. God made Israel "his dominion" as his treasured possession.

Not only so, every step of Israel's exodus was beset with insurmountable difficulties. The sea stood in their way and the river stopped them in their tracks. But "The sea looked and fled; Jordan turned back." When the Lord descended on Mt. Sinai, the whole mountain shook under his feet. "The mountains skipped like rams, the hills like lambs."

Psalm 114 is a celebration of God's unrivaled power. But God does not abuse his power. He uses his power for the benefit of his people. So it is right for us to take heart. Israel had no hope against the giant obstacles before them. But God was on their side. And that is all that mattered. If God is for us, who can be against us?
