In Exodus 3 Moses encounters God in the burning bush. This is a story both well-known and enigmatic. Every Christian knows the story. But the significance of that encounter is not always so clearly understood. Here are a few salient things to consider.

First, "the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush … the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed." The LORD sustains all things but is not sustained by another. The LORD possesses in his own being all that is necessary for himself and his works. The LORD does not depend on any created thing like the bush to "fuel" his fire. The idols of Egypt (and of our own making) that Moses will be sent to challenge depend on the handouts and charitiy (what else should we call it?) of their worshipers. Not so the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Second, this fire that does not consume the bush foreshadows God's gracious presence with his people. God is holy but the sinful people of Israel will not be consumed by his burning holiness. God will deal with them with kindness and mercy.

Lastly, God reveals himself as "I Am" to Moses, and in so doing leads us to the Savior Jesus Christ. The Lord Jesus frequently called himself "I Am" in John's Gospel. Those that did not have the eyes to see and ears to hear were only scandalized by this. But we who know the Lord Jesus see the God of glory who has come to rescue his people. What a great Savior is Jesus! How worthy is he of our worship and adoration!
