12 for 20

Please allow me to state the obvious. We need to read more books. Most (all?) of you understand this already, and need little convincing from me. A few, maybe, need to be reminded. Here are two articles, one by C. S. Lewis, and another by Tim Challis, that explain so very well why reading is both a necessity and a great blessing.

I invite you once again to join me as we read 12 books for the year 2020. There are so many great books, and a list like the one below is inevitably imperfect, and even a little arbitrary. But I have attempted to strike a good balance between the books that inform our minds, stir our hearts, and make us useful in loving other believers and the world. In addition, unlike 2018 and 2019, the list for 2020 contains two classic fictions by C. S. Lewis, the first one, "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe," to ease us into the new year, and the second, "Till We Have Faces," for a nice change of pace in between more serious books. Even though I have read "Till We Have Faces" many times, I still find it so illuminating and so valuable as I think about loving people, and what it means to be honest before God. I'm certain you will enjoy it, and the rest of the books on this list, as much as I do.

So join us for 12 for 20. Let us read together, grow together, and serve our God and our neighbors together!

Finally, in addition to the 12 books below, I invite you to read an excellent devotional book by Alec Motyer, "Isaiah by the Day: a new Devotional Translation." Motyer divides the book of Isaiah into 71 short and easy to read meditations. This book will make an excellent guide for your personal devotions this year. We will be looking to incorporate the lessons of this book into our Lord's Day service where appropriate. Amazon WTSBooks
