Pica is a medical condition which causes those afflicted with it to compulsive eat things that have no nutritional value: dirt, clay, ashes, hair, etc. They even eat paint, metal, or glass. This is a seriously harmful condition. This is also how God describes idolatry: Isa 44:20 "He feeds on ashes; a deluded heart has led him astray…" Idolatry is spending gold and silver to eat ashes. Spiritually lost people compulsively crave the things that neither nourish nor satisfy. But in Isaiah 55 God invites us to a sumptuous banquet.
"Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me … Incline your ear … hear … For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth … so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth…" Here we learn something important. To answer God's invitation to his feast means to listen to his word. For his word is food for our souls. Well did our Lord Jesus say in answering the devil's temptation, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:4). God's word, all of it, is our spiritual food and we cannot survive without it. Is this what you believe?
In addition, the invitation to God's word is (when we understand its full implications) is an invitation to the Word of God, Jesus Christ. Isaiah 55:1 is the background for John 7:37–38, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'" And, of course, John 6:51, "I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh." Jesus is our spiritual food and we cannot survive without him. Is this what you believe? Let us all say, "Amen."
