"The LORD is righteous in all his ways and kind to all his works." Indeed, Psalm 145 is a celebration of God's kindness. The Hebrew word behind "kind" in Psalm 145:17 conveys the idea of someone who practices steadfast love. The English word "kind" is a very apt choice to translate the Hebrew word. The word "kind" is perhaps now too commonplace to think about its nuance. But the word "kind" is related to the word "kin" (as in, "next of kin" or "kinship"). Thus to be kind once carried the sense of treating someone as a part of one's own family. God's kindness, in other words, is his truly wondrous quality of treating his creatures as a part of his family.
God's kindness encompasses everything he has created. "All your works shall give thanks to you … you satisfy the desire of every living thing …" God cares deeply even for animals (a point made powerfully in Jonah 4:11). But mankind is the recipient of God's special kindness. For animals and the rest of living creatures never broke faith with God. Mankind did. This is what makes God's kindness both supremely wondrous and surprising. Psalm 145:8 gloriously proclaims "The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love." This is almost a verbatim citation of what God said about himself in Exodus 34:6 after Israel broke faith with God with the golden calf. This is the kindness of God.
God's kindness is a healing balm for our troubled hearts. We know exactly what we deserve. If God were to deal with us strictly on the basis of justice and according to what we deserve, we can expect only wrath. But God gives us grace, for he has committed himself to be our loving Father. And our Father in heaven will never cast away his struggling children. Our Father runs to the child who returns to him saying, "naked, come to thee for dress; helpless, look to thee for grace." And our Father says, "bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found."
