Is it sin to be shaken? Consider Jesus, the sinless and the holiest man who ever lived: John 13:21 "Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, "Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me."" Or Luke 22:44 "And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground." Jesus knew better than anyone that God is in control. Nevertheless, he was greatly troubled. It is not sin to be afraid. Fear is a very human response to an overwhelming situation when our soul cries out for help. But from where does our help come?
Isaiah 44:2 "Thus says the LORD who made you, who formed you from the womb and will help you: Fear not, O Jacob my servant, Jeshrun whom I have chosen." "Jeshrun" is an affectionate nickname God has for Israel meaning "righteous little one." Even though Israel has utterly failed her noble purpose, God's calling is irrevocable. His purpose for Israel still stands and he will make her "Jeshrun", his "righteous little one." All the fearful circumstances, trials, and troubles are God's holy instruments to make his election and calling come to their fruition. "Fear not" in v.2 is rooted in his eternal purpose for his people.
But how do we even know he can do this? He is the Creator: v.2 "the LORD who made you, who formed you from the womb and will help you". God has both power (creation) and a track record (watchful care from the womb). And his Spirit does transformative and life-giving work: v.3 "I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants" so that thirsty land blossoms with flower and streams run through it.
Isaiah 44:8 God once again says "Fear not, nor be afraid; have I not told you from of old and declared it?" This looks back to vss.6–7 "I am the first and I am the last: besides me there is no god…Let them declare what is to come, and what will happen." God is the LORD of history from beginning to end. All things are in his hands, unfold according to his plan, and he knows and has ordained every step in between. In this fearful world we have a LORD who is more than able to answer and still all our fears. Would you bring your fears to the LORD?
