Oh to know God as David knew God!
Psalm 16 shows us David’s faith in God was more than just duty, or even something he thought of as the right thing to do. David felt an intense pleasure knowing and trusting God. Many, indeed, seek after God as a means of attaining what their hearts desire. God, for them, is nothing more than a useful tool. But David was single-minded. God was not a means to some other end, but the very desire of David’s heart. “I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.”” And, of course, such a man would be drawn to like-minded people. “As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight.”
And the LORD returned David’s single-minded devotion with overwhelming joy. “The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance…Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure…in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” But, gloriously, God’s favor for those who trust in him with their whole heart cannot be exhausted in this world. God will resurrect them to glory. “For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption.”
Thus we have a bridge from David to Jesus Christ. The New Testament applies this Psalm to Jesus in Acts 13:35. Paul proclaims the resurrection of Christ from Psalm 16, and lets us know that David’s utter delight in God foreshadowed Jesus’ whole-hearted and single-minded love for the LORD. Jesus loved the LORD and his heart was drawn to those who love God. And God bestowed upon Jesus honor and glory by raising him from the dead.
Oh to love God as Jesus loves God! What joy it will be to delight in God with our whole heart, and to see him as our greatest and dearest treasure! For we may be sure that Jesus still loves his Father, and his heart is still drawn to those who love his Father. And Jesus will raise us to life and glory.
