This Lord's Day we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord. On Friday Jesus died on the cross. His lifeless body was laid in a tomb. Then "after the Sabbath (Saturday)," that is, on Sunday, Jesus rose from the dead. Ever since that first Resurrection Day, Christians have celebrated our Lord's victory over death throughout history, and will continue to celebrate it until the end of the days and beyond.
Why? The reasons are many and all glorious. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 15:56 "The sting of death is sin…" That is, sin is the real terror behind death. Every death reminds us that death is the wages of sin (Rom 6:23), and at last the time has come for us to pay. But the debt of sin is a debt we cannot repay. And every person that dies unable to pay this debt steps into an eternity of wrath and sorrow.
But Jesus rose from the dead. And for every believer united to Jesus by faith death becomes something else. It is no longer true that "The sting of death is sin." The real terror behind death has been death with. Jesus died and rose and our sins are forgiven and cast out from God's view and remembrance. Death is now no longer the place where life and hope are buried. Death is now the soil from which new life grows and hope becomes reality.
We see this displayed beautifully in the words of our risen Lord. Matthew 28:10 "Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me."" Who are the people whom Jesus calls "my brothers"? They are the same people who denied Jesus and abandoned him in his hour of need. They are the same ones who were ashamed to be seen with him. They are the weak, the cowardly, and the faithless ones. Yet Jesus calls them "my brothers". This is why Jesus died and rose from the dead.
