It is all to common an experience to call out to God in our time of need. A sudden death in the family, a national tragedy, some personal crisis — these and other like things often heighten our spiritual awareness and we call upon God accordingly. But, thankfully, the desperate hour passes (God has answered our prayers for help) and, with it, our spiritual fervor also passes. We answer God's help with apathy, and his kindness with forgetfulness.

Psalm 116 shows us how things ought to be. Here the psalmist is stirred in his heart to love the Lord and give thanks to him. "I love the LORD, because he has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy … Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; our God is merciful … What shall I render to the LORD for all his benefits to me? I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD, I will pay my vows to the LORD in the presence of all his people." In other words, we "repay" the LORD's kindness with a heartfelt worship and service. "O LORD, I am your servant; I am your servant, the son of your maidservant. You have loosed my bonds. I will offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving and call on the name of the LORD." We are saved to worship and to serve.

Give thanks to God. Serve him with joy. Do not let your soul languish, when, in fact, the peace that lulls you to slumber is the gift of God's grace. You are called to better things than this. You are called to worship and to serve the Lord who loves you.
