What motivates you to study the Bible? We, of course, have our reasons. Perhaps we want to know God better. We may be looking for some help in certain areas of our lives. Or we may be hoping for some insight about talking to our unbelieving neighbors. There are, no doubt, many other reasons besides these reasons. And in their right places and in right proportions, they are all good reasons to study the Bible.
But have you ever wondered what motivated Jesus to study the Bible? In Isaiah 50:4 we learn one such reason. There the Suffering Servant of the LORD (Jesus) speaks through the prophet Isaiah before his incarnation. "The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary. Morning by morning he awakens; he awakens my ear to hear as those who are taught." Jesus studied God's word so that he may "sustain with a word him who is weary." What a marvelous and kind Savior is he! He exerted himself day and night, and learned with meekness day and night, that he may be our comforter.
Also, please don't miss the obvious. Jesus, having the entire universe at his disposal, dug into the resources in God's word in order to sustain us. As Christians in the Reformed tradition, we are familiar with the Five Solas of the Protestant Reformation. Sola Scriptura (only Scripture) was a deeply held conviction of the Protestant Reformers. And we can clearly see that they learned it from Jesus. Jesus went to God's word for you and for me. No other resource could compare or replace God's word. Let us, then, follow where Jesus leads us. Let us go to God's word. Let us learn and let us be taught by it. For the word of God is where we will find healing and strength for our souls.
