In Jeremiah 11:18–20 the prophet Jeremiah writes about the opposition he faced when he supported King Josiah's religious reforms to bring the nation back to God. The hostility against Jeremiah was such that he writes, "But I was like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter." Jeremiah also reports the words of their schemes against him. "Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name be remembered no more." They were determined to oppose Jeremiah even to his death.

Jeremiah's experience and words also anticipate the sufferings of the Lord Jesus Christ. For it was Jesus who was "like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter." The image of a gentle lamb evokes utter helplessness. It also brings moral clarity to the situation. What could a gentle lamb possibly have done to deserve such hostility? The violence done against the gentle lamb had no justification. It was simply the acting out of an evil heart that hated God and his glory.

But what is our response to the gentle lamb that died? We recognize the loving sacrifice of our Savior, and acknowledge that his death has brought us pardon and reconciliation. So we offer our Savior our glad and heartfelt worship. All who neither know nor love our Savior strive to wipe his name from their memory and history. But we will declare the lovely name of our Savior today, tomorrow, and forever.
