As the Israelites neared the promised land at the end of their 40-year wilderness wandering, Moses instructed them to live according to God's word. "And now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the rules that I am teaching you, and do them, that you may live, and go in and take possession of the land the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you. You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God that I command you." (Deuteronomy 4:2) In other words, the people of Israel must never think they are wiser than God. For when we either add or subtract from God word, we are in fact sitting in judgment of God's word with the intention of "correcting" God.
Moses continues, "Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, 'Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.'" (Deut 6:4) The problem, of course, is that people around us do not applaud us for our faithful allegiance to God's word. Rather, they will call us "fools" and say that we "lack sense" for abiding in God's Word.
Thus we have to make a decision. Would you rather have the world say you are wise, or would you rather have God say that you are wise? Remember, also, that what the world calls wisdom is actually foolishness, and what the world calls "lacking sense" is wisdom in God's eyes. Whose verdict matters more to you? The world's? Or God's? Let there be no confusion. There is no one's verdict that matters more than what God says. So we choose God's ways.
