Joshua 24 gives us the last words of one of the greatest leaders of the people of Israel, Joshua. Joshua recounts before the people all the acts of God's power and faithfulness, and asks them, "choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." When I first read the words "But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD" as a child, I was deeply moved. These words still stir my soul. Indeed, we must make up our minds. Will we serve the LORD of grace for life, or will we serve the gods of shame for death? For Joshua there was only one way. And there is only one way for us as well.

The hymn "All the Way My Savior Leads Me" beautifully expresses Joshua's (and our) settled conviction to serve the Lord. "All the way my Savior leads me — O the fullness of his love! Perfect rest to me is promised in my Father's house above: when my spirit, clothed, immortal, wings its flight to realms of day, this my song through endless ages: Jesus led me all the way!" Why can we not serve the Lord who has so faithfully led us thus far? And how can we trust any other except the One who has led us every step along and "cheers each winding path I tread"? So we confess with Joshua. "As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."
