Grumbling spirit and distrust of God can creep in even when thanksgiving and trust should be our response. Adam and Eve looked down upon God's provision and goodness in Eden. So the children of Israel complained and grumbled in the aftermath of their delivery from bondage in Egypt. But just how much is enough? How many times does God have to show Israel his power and care for Israel to finally rest in God with faith? At the very least God showed his power and care for his people ten times in Egypt through judgment plagues. Then God shielded Israel from Egypt's pursuing forces, and delivered his people through the sea. Yet all this was still not enough for Israel. THe people looked back fondly on their slavery, and resented their deliverance.
How about us? We also grumble and complain. And, again, not because God has proven himself unreliable in the past. But, rather, we distrust God in spite of the fact that God has been good and kind to us. Just what will it take for us to finally rest in God? Why are we like this?
So it dawns on us. We strive against God on the assumption that what most urgently needs to change are our circumstances. But our most pressing need is not so much the change of our circumstances, but the change of our heart. We need our heart renewed and revived. That is our prayer and longing.
