How do we know that God loves us? When is the good time to give thanks to God? Many people answer these questions is predictable ways. They say, "I know God loves me because life is good! God has blessed me with a wonderful life, so I will thank him." The problem, of course, is that these answers fall short.
King David did not write the jubilant praises of Psalm 34 during the best days of his life. In fact, some of David's most difficult and hopeless days form the background of Psalm 34. David was an unwanted man in Israel. David had no choice but to seek refuge with the Philistines in Gath, the hometown of Goliath whom David killed. How desperate David must have been to think Gath was the best option for him! But their king Abimelech knew David and feared him. David thus acted like a madman to thrown off suspicion. This is what makes the confident praise of Psalm 34 so surprising. David did not doubt God's love for him when he could not see the path before him. And he did not reserve his praise only for the good and pleasant days of his life. David loved the Lord and worshiped him with joy amidst his deepest trials.
How did David do this? David was strengthened by his knowledge of God's faithfulness. David worshiped because he knew God. Do you? Do you know that God is faithful? Do you know that today is the right time to thank him? May we all discover this truth. May God's faithfulness empower our souls to endure and thrive under trials.
