The two Scripture readings for this week are closely related. In Numbers 21:4–9 we see Israel doing what Israel did best, which is complaining! "And the people spoke against God and against Moses, "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food." That is, "Why did you free us from our backbreaking bondage and bring us out of the land that killed our babies? And as for this manna, this bread from heaven, we hate this worthless stuff!" Israel complained of salvation, so the LORD sent them judgment. Israel complained of life, therefore the LORD sent death. "Then the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died."
What follows point us to see the work of Jesus Christ. Israel repented and Moses interceded. And the LORD commanded Moses, "Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live." Thus the symbol of God's judgment upon sin was lifted up before their eyes, and everyone who looked upon the judgment symbol with hope of healing was healed.
In John 3:14–21 Jesus shows himself to be the judgment symbol that brings life. "And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not sent his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him." The world that God loves is one that deserves to perish. Yet if they will only look upon the Son of God condemned and crucified in their place, then they will find healing and life. For Jesus upon the cross is the sign of God's judgment upon sin. And we look look to him and are saved.
Enough, then, of complaining! We deserved judgment, but he gave us salvation. We deserved death, but he gave us life. May we then return to him grateful worship and trusting service.
