Have you ever shared the good news of Jesus Christ with anyone, only to have them look at you as though you were insane? If they are of the polite sort, they will not make what they think about you so obvious. But even if they don't say it out loud, they think you are crazy. As for those with less filters, they will let you know how little they think of you and your message.
We long for them to understand. But we are not surprised by their reaction. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 1:18–25 "For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." Paul was well aware how unattractive the gospel was, how it flies in the face of world's wisdom and taste. But God was pleased "through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe." God saves through the condemned One. What the world perceives as his weakness is his power.
What Christians do every Sunday morning appears both irrelevant and ridiculous to those who are perishing. Yet we stand in awe. If the world counts what is preached as a folly, we know it is nothing less than God's power and wisdom.
