We rightly seek God's guidance when we are faced with a difficult decision. Should I take this job or not? Should we put in an offer for this house or look for another? These, and other questions like them, are important turning points in our lives for which we need God's help and direction.

Psalm 25, however, teaches us to seek God's guidance not just for specific need of the moment, but for the whole totality of life. "Make me to know your ways, O LORD; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long." David is expressing his desire to order his entire life according to God's will, not just one or two particular moments of it.

David lived amongst people who thought it ridiculous to follow God's ways and paths. David calls them his enemies, not so much for the personal opposition he experienced from them, but because they scoffed at fear of the Lord and God's friendship meant nothing to them. David felt so alone in his faith. "Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted … Consider how many are my foes, and with what violent hatred they hate me."

Psalm 25 does not end with an exuberant celebration. There is no praise for answered prayer. Instead, we see a faith that stands firm against mockery, and a patient waiting for God's day. We trust. Why? "He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way." We wait. "All the paths of the LORD are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies."

Don't give up. Trust. Wait. God will not fail his people.
