Psalm 19 famously tells us that God is not silent. God speaks. He reveals himself in nature. "The heavens declare the glory of God." God reveals himself in his word. "The law of the LORD is perfect … the testimony of the LORD is sure … the precepts of the LORD are right … " We are surrounded by God's testimonies.
God has made himself known. But, as Paul tells us, men in their unrighteousness "suppress the truth" of what God reveals in nature (Romans 1:18). Our culture and society dismiss God's word as something worthless, as something that conceals the "truth" rather than the very means by which God reveals the truth about himself and ourselves. Even in some so-called "churches" God's word is silenced through neglect and bad teaching. God speaks. But we have invented a thousand different ways to not hear him.
Let me urge you to do two things before you come to church this Lord's Day. Go outside and spend a few minutes soaking in God's glory — his wisdom, his power, and his presence. Also open up your Bible and read the passages indicated for this week's worship. And pray. Pray as you feel the heat of the sun. Pray as you turn the pages of the Bible. Pray that God may grant you eyes to see and ears to hear. Pray, as David concludes Psalm 19, "Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer."
