Death is only the beginning.
No, this is not something we say to ourselves because we cannot stand the horror of death, because we want to say something positive and uplifting in the face of that soul-crushing finality. Death is a long good-bye to every relationship, every dream, every potential, and every hope for a better better day. Death is evil. No wonder we wrap death inside polite euphemisms and throw life-celebrations. To really mourn death for what it is breaks our hearts.
But God makes all things new. And in God, death dies a death.
Isaiah 6:1–7 is written against the backdrop of deaths. "In the year that King Uzziah died…" The prophet glimpses God in glory and knows his life is forfeit. "Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips…" And, of course, the background of the book of Isaiah is the death of the nation of Israel. But death does not have the last word. The holy God cleanses the prophet and takes his guilt away. And Isaiah, whose life was justly forfeit, is raised to a new life. "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? … "Here I am! Send me."
The rest of the book of Isaiah reveals how God puts death to death, and brings to life that which was once dead. God renews dreams and the river of hope washes away stagnant despair. And Isaiah 6 — God's holiness — is the source of it all. God is holy — radically committed to good and cannot make peace with evil. This holy God will destroy death and raise his people from death. Thus Jesus rose from the dead, and we will also. We have hope for the future because God is holy. Death is only the beginning.
