In Numbers 6:22—27 the LORD commanded Aaron and his sons to bless his people with these words. "The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace." This is a beautiful passage that invites us to dig in for its rich and varied treasures. First, it is a great example of praying according to God's will, and the assurance that when we pray according to God's will, he hears us and answers us. It was God's will for the priests to pray for the blessing of God's people. God promises to hear that prayer and bless his people.
Second, we learn from this passage that the Old Testament priests, the shepherds of God's people, were called to pray for God's people. Indeed, this ministry of prayer continues to be a very important duty and a joytful privilege of the New Testament shepherds as well. Pastors and elders, in other words, should faithfully pray for God's blessings upon his people.
Third, this blessing points us to the prayer of the true high priest, Jesus Christ. For it is Jesus who seeks God's blessings upon us, and indeed makes them ours in him. It is in Jesus that God smiles upon us as a loving father and shows us grace. It is because of Jesus we have peace. In other words, the Aaronic Blessing of Numbers 6 points us to the Lord Jesus Christ and all the blessings we have in him.
Would you spend some time and reflect upon this blessing before you come to church this Sunday? Think of what Jesus has done to secure this blessing for you. Then you will find that your heart grows both tender and warm for Jesus. Then come to worship and bless the name of the Savior.
