God is omniscient. He knows and remembers everything. We have a life-long track record of sin. That means God and sinners make a volatile combination. God cannot abide sinners anymore than light can coexist with darkness. And we cannot survive God. Like a dried out twig in the path of a raging wild fire, no sinner is safe before God.
How, then, does the holy God dwell with the likes of us? The psalmist expresses his wonder in Psalm 130:3–4 "If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared." This is the wonder of God's grace. He forgives. Thus we fear him in all the rich and layered meaning of the word "fear," which means to honor, respect, love, serve, worship, etc. Or, as the New Testament puts it in 1 John 4:19, "We love because he first loved us."
Psalm 130 is "A Song of Ascents" — one of the hymns that God's people sang as they made their pilgrimage to worship God in the Jerusalem Temple. And it contains a kind of joy that no unforgiven sinner can dare presume upon, but is the heritage of every believers who has come to know God's mercies. "O Israel, hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love, and with him is plentiful redemption. And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities." Yes! "My sin, not in part, but the whole, is nailed to the cross. and I bear it no more; praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!" Amen and amen!
