It is hard to imagine another Scripture passage more universally beloved than Psalm 23. Psalm 23 comforts us when we feel alone. We are reminded the Good Shepherd is with us always. Psalm 23 ministers to us in our dark and painful seasons. The Good Shepherd guides us safely through "the valley of the shadow of death." Psalm 23 assures us when God's purpose for our lives seems unclear. The Good Shepherd follows us with "goodness and mercy" and leads us "dwell in the house of the LORD forever." These are, of course, just a few of the reasons why Psalm 23 is so special to us.

Do you know the Good Shpherped of Psalm 23? The LORD who was David's faithful Shepherd is our faithful Shepherd in Jesus Christ. That is, what we love in Psalm 23 is a portrait of our Lord Jesus. The blessings enumerated in Psalm 23 are ours only in Christ. It is Jesus who pursues us with goodness and mercy, and Jesus who carries us to dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

Would you spend some time with Jesus before you come to worship this Lord's Day? Think of his goodness and mercy. Meditate on what price Jesus paid to carry us safely through the valley of the shadow of death. Be comforted by his promise to make our cups overflow. Then come to worship. We will worship our worthy Lord and Shepherd with joy.
