We all know the apostle Paul as a man who possessed a brilliant theological mind. Not only so, Paul was a man of singular focus. Nothing could stop Paul from doing what God called him to do. No persecution, hunger, illness, poverty, or chains could stop him from proclaiming the gospel. Paul had so many outstanding qualities about him. Perhaps that is why we sometimes miss the obvious. Paul was a man of prayer.
Paul typically begins his letters with a prayer. 1 Corinthians 1:1–9 is a great example. And when we reflect on this prayer, we cannot help but be moved by the ways he prayed for the Corinthians believers. Yes, those Corinthians. So full of themselves and so full of worldliness. Yet Paul calls them "sanctified in Christ Jesus" (v.1), who are "enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge" (v.5), "not lacking in any gift" (v.7), etc. Paul's words are full of grace and in his prayers sees the Corinthians not as they are in their mess, but as who they are in Christ and as what they will one day become by God's faithfulness. God "will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ."
We live in an age obsessed with identity. Indeed, who are we? Remember who Christ has called you to be. Remember also what you will one day be because God is faithful.
