The two passages for this Lord's Day worship, Exodus 34:29–35 and 2 Corinthians 3:12–18, form a natural pair. In the Exodus passage we read about how Moses was changed in God's presence. "When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two tablets of the testimony in his hands as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses, and behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him." God's glory, even when it was mediated through Moses and the people Israel was not directly exposed to it, was simply too much to handle. Thus Moses put a veil over his face to protect the frightened people.

Paul reflects on this event in the 2 Corinthians passage. The veil that hid God's glory in Moses' face still remained to hide God. "But their minds were hardened. For to this day, when they read the old covenant, the same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away…But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed…And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit." The overall point is simple. God's glory mediated through Moses could only keep people at a distance from God in fear. But God's glory mediated through Jesus brings us freedom and transformation.

In the days of the Old Covenant the people cried out to God, "Do not come near, for your presence is our undoing." But now God's New Covenant people cry, "Let me draw near, for your presence is my joy and life." This is what Jesus has done for us. God has not changed. But Jesus has changed us. We are no longer the people who must hide from God. Rather, it is our great joy and privilege to come into God's presence and call upon his name. Praise the Lord!
