Waiting is a lost art.

The fantastic technological advancements of our age, alas, are not free. We quickly prepare our meals in the microwave oven. Broadband internet hustle our information instantaneously across the globe. Amazon delivers our package overnight. These and many other modern blessings have made instant gratification the norm, not the exception. But such wonderful conveniences are not free. We are paying for them with the rapidly disappearing currency of patience.

Psalm 37 is a lesson in patience. David knew well how much aggravation the wicked can cause in his life. David’s life had many seasons of sleepless nights, deep frustration, and even tears, because the unscrupulous and the faithless acted with seeming impunity. And, of course, it is only human to feel anger at such miscarriage of justice.

But David says in Ps 37:1 “Fret not yourself because of evildoers…” The expression in Hebrew means something like “Don’t get heated / Don’t blow up because of evildoers…” And with the exhortation comes explanation. “For they will soon fade like the grass…Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him…” David learned to see the present moment from the perspective of God’s long plan. We must wait. From our limited vantage point God often seems late. But the truer perspective is to look at each moment from God’s eternity.

So we wait. “Commit your ways to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act…Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.” But waiting for the LORD does not mean inactive. We worship. And we do good, even to those that do not do us good. This is how we live in view of eternity.
