Just when we think God is done blessing us, it turns out he has only just begun!

In 2 Samuel 7:1–17 we see David secure in his kingship with his troubled days behind him. David is stunned by all the ways that God has blessed him. David feels he must somehow honor God. After all, how can he sit and do nothing for God, when God has done so much for him?

Thus David sets out to build a house for his God. David was determined to build the Lord's Temple. David, of course, did well to honor the Lord who has blessed him so richly. Gratitude is a fitting and appropriate response to God's kindness. But just when David thought it was now his turn to do something for God, God tells him otherwise.

2 Samuel 7:5 the LORD speaks to David, "Would you build me a house to dwell in?" Then 7:11 "the LORD declares to you that the LORD will make you a house." In effect, the LORD is saying to David, "Oh, you think you will build ME a house? I don't think so. I am going to build YOU a house!" David could not imagine God blessing him more than he already had. But God was just getting started.

Ephesians 2:11–20 shows us how both David's longing to build a house for God and God's promise to build a house for David are fulfilled in one reality. In Christ, we are "being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit." The church growing in holiness is how God blesses us. God calls the believers to gather in holiness because he means to bless us. It certainly puts what we think about the church and holiness in a very different, and more glorious, light. Does it not?
