The story of David and Goliath in 1 Samuel 17 is both well-known and poorly understood. Many moralize the story and see themselves in David. Consequently, the story then becomes a call to act with courage as David did, in order to "slay the giants" of our lives. While this is a popular take on this passage, it errs in both its interpretation and application.

What then is the right reading of this story? First, the people of Israel, under the leadership of its own choosing, King Saul, is utterly powerless to stand up to the Philistines. The whole nation is as hopeless as it is powerless. But God has raised for them a savior. Outwardly speaking David did not impress anyone. But David's power to deliver Israel did not come from the things we might count as strength. Rather, David triumphed over Goliath because he was the Lord's chosen savior of his people. And Israel, with and because of David, triumphed over their enemy and foe.

That is, we are not David in the story. The lesson is not for us to "slay our giants." Rather, we are the hopeless and powerless people doomed to die. Our strength and resources have failed us. But God has provided for us a Savior, Jesus Christ. David was pointing to Jesus. Jesus is the beautiful and glorious Savior, with whom and because of whom we conquer over sin and death. So we celebrate Jesus. Without him we are nothing and we have nothing. But with Jesus as our mighty warrior, we are more than conquerors.
