The people of Israel chose Saul as their king. They were impressed with his commanding presence. And, at least for a little while, Saul managed to keep up appearances. But, sooner or later, a man's heart is revealed. And Saul's conduct increasingly bore the telltale marks of a self-seeking and disobedient heart. And, indeed, everything came crashing down for him when Saul's disobedience led to the LORD rejecting Saul as king in 1 Samuel 15.
1 Samuel 15:34–16:13 is, then, is the LORD's answer. The LORD directed Samuel to Jesse the Bethlehemite to anoint Israel's next king. Samuel was baffled that the LORD rejected Jesse's seven sons, each man all impressive in their own right. But "the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart." And the man of LORD's choosing was young David, who was considered at first not worthy enough to be even considered as a possibility. But even though David was despised in man's eyes, the LORD chose him and put his Spirit upon him.
The LORD's choice of David points us to the person and the work of Jesus Christ. As to his person, he was unimpressive in man's eyes. He was despised. But the LORD appointed Jesus to be our Savior. For Jesus was the greater David, one whose heart was pure and acceptable in the LORD's eyes. Jesus' life and works have power to save us because they were the gifts of a pure and devoted heart. This is why no one but Jesus can be our king.
Paul clearly saw the implications of following such a Savior. 2 Corinthians 5:12 "We are not commending ourselves to you again but giving you cause to boast about us, so that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearance and not about what is in the heart." What is in your heart? What does the LORD see? May our God see a sincere and wholehearted faith in our heart, and an eagerness to serve him with joy.
