1 Samuel 3:1-10 is a scene of transition. On the one hand is the old priest Eli who did not honor the Lord. Under Eli's leadership "the word of the LORD was rare in those days; there was no frequent vision." That reality of spiritual declension is reflected in Eli's person. "At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see…" This is a not-so-subtle dig at Eli's failure as the priest. Eli cannot hear the word of the LORD, as the LORD does not speak to him. And Eli cannot receive vision (here a synonym for word) as his eyes are dim.
But in Eli's place God has raised up a better leader, Samuel. The LORD chose to speak to him instead of Eli. But Samuel is young, and does not yet know how to answer the LORD. Thus Eli counsels him, perhaps his only good counsel: "if he calls you, you shall say, 'Speak, LORD, for your servant hears.'" One wonders if Eli, in his waning years, rues his life time of not "hearing" the LORD. To be sure, if paid lip service to the LORD. He went through the motions. But he did not really hear the LORD or obey him. Thus Eli did Samuel this act of kindness, instructing him to say "'Speak, LORD, for your servant hears.'" Thus Samuel answered the LORD, and the LORD spoke to him.
It is also our duty and privilege to say to the LORD, "'Speak, LORD, for your servant hears.'" Would you make this your own prayer as you come to worship this week? And may the LORD indeed speak to his his word of grace, truth, and life.
