Opposites do not attract. Thus the man who has made his home in sin is repulsed by the God of absolute holiness. And God is light. No darkness can coexist with God. No wonder, then, that God's holiness is the least welcomed of all of God's attributes. Our culture talks happily about God's love, conveniently ignoring that friendship with God is forever out of reach for those who have made their home in sin. And what is true of sinners alienated from God is also true, to some extent, of believers justified and reconciled to God. We acknowledge God's holiness, as we must, but without much joy. God's holiness, even for us, is a source of fear. But is that all it is?
Isaiah 6:1–7 is a well-known passage about God's holiness. The prophet Isaiah, the man who had wholeheartedly devoted his whole life to serve the Lord, even he was himself terrified when he glimpsed God's holiness. And if a holy and devoted man like Isaiah felt himself "undone" before the holy God, there is no way that you and I can be any better off than Isaiah. This is a passage that shows us how unapproachable God is.
But it is more. Isaiah 6:1–7 also shows us that God cannot abide sin and cannot stand to see sin's defilement upon his people. So what does he do? The LORD provides atonement and cleanses his people! Thus it was the LORD's holiness that provided the cross of Christ that you and I also may be cleansed from sin and reconciled to God. God's holiness and love are not incompatible mysteries. In God they are one.
Thus we invite you to celebrate God's holiness. We have life, hope, and future, because God is holy.
