We only need to look around our church to see that God fulfilled promises to Abraham and Sarah in Genesis 17:1–7, 15–16. God promised to make Abraham "the father of a multitude of nations." Likewise, God promised Sarah that "she shall become nations". We did not inherit the DNA of Abraham and Sarah as their physical descendants. But we have come to know God by faith as Abraham did, and so by faith we have become Abraham and Sarah's children. And having become Abraham's heirs by faith, our calling and aspiration are to live by faith as Abraham did. By faith Abraham trusted God's promises and his faith was counted to him as righteousness (Genesis 15:6; Romans 4:5). By faith Abraham "was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God." (Hebrews 11:10) May we call upon the God of Abraham as our God, and live by faith as Abraham did.

In Romans chapter 4 Paul reflects on God's promises to Abraham. Paul concludes his reflections with these words: "But the words "it was counted to him" were not written for his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:23–25) What comfort it is that every sinner who comes to Jesus receives forgiveness and righteousness! The blessings here enumerated are not exhausted in one moment. We experience the richness of this blessing all the days of our lives. Every time we ask the Lord for grace, he grants it, freely, lavishly, and joyfully. Although our hearts are often darkened by our continued struggles against sin, the Lord assures that we are forgiven and righteous before him. Seek the Lord's grace for your every guilt, every regret, and every shame. And may the Lord's rich kindness make you sing!
