Next Tuesday we and our fellow citizens will cast our votes to elect a new president. It is thus appropriate for us to think about what it means and what it does not mean that we vote. We vote, and pray, that we may faithfully participate in the affairs of our community. We Christians have dual citizenship. We are both the citizens of this nation and also the citizens of God’s heavenly kingdom. As the citizens of this nation, we earnestly seek the good of our neighbors, and we pray for God’s help that we may make wise and righteous decisions. That is what it means for us to vote.

However, our voting does not mean that we have for one second bought into the breathless self-promotion and promises of our political candidates to be and do what only God can do. Each candidate, in their own way, claims to be the savior of our nation and hope for our future. We disagree.

“Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation…Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD his God…who executes justice for the oppressed, who gives food to the hungry…The LORD will reign forever, your God, O Zion, to all generations. Praise the LORD!” (Psalm 146) May God bless our nation and help us. And may God’s will be done. And, remember, elections come and go and so do presidents and candidates. But our God reigns forever and he put our trust in him.
