Psalm 127 neatly brings together the three things that drive our life: building (work), security, and raising children. These things were so important to the author, Solomon. But, unfortunately, Solomon does not seem to have lived by his own insight. In the end, Solomon’s legacy was tainted with bitter disaster, and he who was once acknowledged as the wisest of men, died a fool. Things would have turned out so differently if only he had heeded his own counsel: “Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.”
Our most recent election, as all elections do, brought to the fore our anxiety over building, security, and raising children. And we cast our votes to the candidate who seemed best equipped to give us peace. But we are no different than foolish Solomon if we forget that meaningful work, safety, and a happy home are God’s gifts to us. Either the LORD will give them to us, or all our striving for them will be in vain.
There was such a disconnect between what Solomon knew and how he lived. How about you? Our worship answers this question. We worship God, for we know, that “Unless the LORD builds the house, those who built it labor in vain…” May the LORD bless our country and our home.
