“Who in their right mind would possibly love you?”
This was Satan’s challenge to God. In Job chapter 1 Satan insinuated that the only reason Job worships God is because God has bribed him with gifts. If not for the bribes, Satan challenged God, Job will see that you are just not worth it. That is, Satan’s hatred and contempt are not so much directed against Job as they are directed against God. “You are not worth it! Who in their right mind would love you for who you are?” But Job remained steadfast even after he lost children and everything he had.
In Job chapter 2 Satan once again challenged God. “Skin for skin! All that a man has he will give for his life. But stretch out your hand and touch his bone and flesh, and he will curse you to your face.” Then Satan afflicted Job’s body with terrible agony. Job’s own wife challenged him with contempt. “Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die.” But Job remained steadfast. ““Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips.”
What can possibly explain Job’s steadfast faith and love? Job lost everything. So why does he still worship God? This is the difference between having a transactional relationship with God and having a genuine relationship with God. In a transactional mindset God is only as good as he is useful. In other words, what makes him worthy of worship is directly tied to what profit we can get out of him. If the cost of worshiping God is more than what we get out of him in return, then we might as well be done with him.
But a genuine relationship with God is built upon a different foundation. Faith looks up to God even amidst loss, and says, “My God is worthy of my love and worship. God is more to me than the gifts he gives. God is good always, regardless of whether the path before me is easy or difficult.”
Is this your faith? How would you answer Satan’s challenge to God, “Who in their right mind would possibly love you?”
