If we are looking for something to put our minds in a jolly mood, Psalm 22 is a poor choice as the opening passage for our worship service. But it is a great passage to frame our hearts and minds in true reverence and awe as we draw near God in worship. For this is a psalm that expresses not only David’s anguish, but our Savior’s anguish through the experience and voice of David. Indeed, who can forget that our Savior’s last words on the cross came from this psalm? “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” This psalm gives us a window into Jesus’ heart as he died for our sins on the cross.

In this psalm we come face to face with a profound truth. The immortal One took on human flesh that he may taste the bitterness of mortality. The glorious One became man so that he may be abased. And he who was the very Word of God himself was made to endure the Father’s shunning silence. “O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest.

Jesus endured all these and more so that you and I might have eternal life. Through Jesus we are made rich with every spiritual blessing. And because of Jesus the Spirit has come to dwell in us, and God will never shun us or shut us out. Indeed, there is in this psalm nothing frivolous or tends to an easy chuckle. But this psalm is the treasury for our souls and the wellspring of true joy.
