One of the reasons why both unbelievers and even some professing believers resent the orthodox and historic Christian faith is its insistence to talk about man's guilt. Indeed, who wants to feel bad about themselves? But notice what has happened. If the problem with guilt is that we feel bad about ourselves, then the solution is to not mention it. We are then free to seek out therapy, self-improvement techniques, or surround ourselves with cheerleaders to boost our self-esteem. If guilt is mere psychological hangup, then we can be saved from guilt by changing the way we think about ourselves. But this is all a serious error. The problem with guilt is not that we feel bad about ourselves. The real problem with guilt is that we have not lived up to God's standard, and as a result we are alienated from our Maker and the Ruler of the universe. If so, what peace can we possibly have in life? What assurance can we possibly have that the universe that is created by God and exists for his glory will "just work out" for the benefit of those who are alienated from the Lord of that universe? This is why it is critical to understand guilt not as the bad feelings we have about ourselves, but as the obejective reality of the sinner before the holy God. What, or who, then, can save us from our guilt? Only Jesus Christ! That is why we worship and love him.
