Before We Worship

We will gather for worship this week one day after the Reformation Day. Therefore, it behooves us to gratefully remember God's mercies to us. Indeed, we must remember so that we may find hope. The Church is always in need of reforming according to the Word of God. And our age is no different. Unless Christians in every age return to the solas of the Reformation over and over again, the Church is bound to grow weak and impure. So we remember.

Sola Scriptura. God's Word alone has final authority over our faith and practice. Not man's opinion or traditions, but God's Word alone leads us.

Sola Fide. We are saved by faith alone, not by works. We contribute nothing to our salvation and add nothing to the redeeming work of Jesus Christ upon the cross.

Sola Gratia. We are saved by God's grace alone. None of us deserve to be saved. God owes no one any favor. But he has bestowed his sovereign mercy freely.

Solus Christus. Christ alone! We have or need no other savior than Jesus Christ. If we are in Christ then we have everything we need for salvation and for glory.

Soli Deo Gloria. To God alone be the glory. Glory and praise belong to God alone, and we live well only when we live for God's glory.

These are the five solas of the Reformation. Remember them. Cherish them. And come along and work with us so that we may continue to reform God's church according to the Word of God.
