Before We Worship
In John 14:16–17 Jesus said, "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you." These two short verses contain a tremendous amount of power. Namely, the Holy Spirit is given to us because of Jesus' petition (And I will ask the Father). The Spirit is qualitatively same as the Son in his capacity to minister to us but distinct in identity (and he will give you another Helper). The Spirit is given to be our eternal companion (to be with you forever). There is a specific and unchanging stability to the Spirit's person and ministry (even the Spirit of truth). The Father does not give the Spirit indiscriminately, but only to the elect (whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him). And there will be an intimate relationship between the believer and the Holy Spirit (You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you).
That is, the presence of the Holy Spirit empowers and enriches us. Of course, Jesus would not give us any less a Gift. For when Jesus gives, he gives his best and his all. And so we honor the Spirit when we long for a deeper communion with him and when we walk in his ways. Is this indeed true for you?
Let us turn to him for help. He is, after all, our Helper. He delights to help us. Will you ask him to draw near you? Will you ask him to fill you?
