Feeling lost is a very human experience. The world is vast. The challenges we face are complex. There are many problems we have to solve. Every day we have to make any number of choices, the consequences of which range from insignificant to profound. How can we not feel overwhelmed and lost?

In Psalm 17 we see what godliness looks like when we have more questions than answers. David remembers and prays for the fulfillment of God's promises. Truly, this is a pattern of godliness we see frequently in the Bible. God gives us his promises so that we may build our prayers and lives around them.

In Psalm 17 David contrasts the righteousness and the wicked. In doing so David is reflecting on the promises of Psalm 1 — The righteous, "In all that he does, he prospers." But "The wicked are not so … the way of the wicked will perish." David remembers and prays for God's promises to be fulfilled. "My steps have helf fast to your paths; my feet have not slipped. I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God … Keep me as the apple of your eye…" As for the wicked who follow "the ways of the violent" and "close their hearts to pity" David prays that what God promised in Psalm 1 will be fulfilled. "Arise, O LORD! Confront him, subdue him!"

David ends his prayer on a confident note. "As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness; when I awake, I shall be satisfied with your likeness." When we pray God's promises, we know that we are praying according to God's will, and therefore certain that God will answer our prayers. When we build our lives upon God's promises, we are building on the only foundation that will never be shaken. That is to say, David's confidence and hope in God are the least surprising thing in the entire universe. One day everything that we thought were certain and inevitable will pass away. That is how entropy works. But God's promises will never fail and we can build our lives on them.
