It is so much easier to begin well than to end well. In Exodus 19 we see the birth of the nation of Israel. The LORD led the house of Israel out of Egypt and brought them to the foot of Mt. Sinai and said to them, "You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself. Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples…and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation."
In Egypt Israelites were the objects of scorn and disposable commodity. The LORD would make Israel his treasured possession. The Egyptians despised the Israelites and treated them as beneath them. The LORD would make them "a kingdom of priests and a holy nation." And here at the beginning Israel rightly pledged her faith to the LORD. "All the people answered together and said, "All that the LORD has spoken we will do."" They began so well.
Sadly, however, they did not end well. Many begin the race well enough, but not all finish the race well. How about you? Are you running the race of your faith well? Will you finish your race well? Israel lost sight of her LORD and stumbled. But there is One who has finished the race well. Jesus, the true Israel, ran the race well and he has conquered. And we, the Church, are his body. Our Head has crossed the finish line. And we, his body, will surely follow our Leader across the finish line. Keep your eye on the prize. Keep your eye on Jesus.
