Jesus loved children and he often talked about them. "Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 18:4) "Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it." (Mark 10:15) Since these words come from our Lord, it behooves us to take heed and develop a child-like faith.
As it is often (and rightly) noted, a child-like faith is not a childish faith. Immaturity is not a virtue and Scripture commands us to attain maturity (1 Cor 14:20; Eph 4:13). A child-like faith, however, is the goal of every believer, and David beautifully draws it out for us in Psalm 131.
"O LORD, my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high…" To receive the kingdom of God like a child means to be humble before God and man. "I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me." This is not a prohibition againt one of the most endearing qualities in children, that is, finding wonder in the world, which the jaded eyes of the adults miss. Rather, it is a warning against the kind of presumptuousness that makes light of great things.
Finally, to possess a child-like faith means resting in God's faithful care. "But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me." A nursing infant is always crying, for it has not yet learned by experience the faithful love of his mother. Babies cry in fear and in need. But a weaned child has learned by experience that his mother loves her, and that all his needs will be met. A weaned child has cast her fear into the abyss of her mother's deep love.
Yes, much more can be said about this child-like faith. But here is the starting point. "O Israel, hope in the LORD from this time forth and forevermore." Let your heart be at rest and your mind be in peace. Not because you have some vague notion that "everything will be alright." Groundless emotion is never enough. But we are children and we can rest in our Father's goodness.
