Here is an important question. "What is the Christian ministry all about?" Another way to ask this question is "What is it that God's people most urgently need?" That is, the first question concerns more than the professional "how-tos" of those engaged in vocational Christian ministry. It really has to do with what God sees as the most pressing need of his people (and he knows us best), and what God has provided in order to meet that most pressing need.

Paul's assessment of his own ministry is most helpful here. In 1 Corinthians 2:2 Paul writes, "For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified." We need Jesus. The goal of Christian ministry is to give Jesus to God's people. The goal of the Christian life is to receive Jesus in his fullness. No wonder, Paul fleshes this out in 1 Corinthians 2:1–16. Jesus, "the Lord of glory" is the "hidden wisdom of God" that "God has revealed to us through the Spirit." The Father gives his Son through his Spirit.

There is always a constant pressure, both from the culture and also from believers who are well-meaning but misinformed, for Christian ministry to have a different aim than proclaiming Christ, and for Christian life to make less of Christ and more of the felt need of the moment. But take away Christ and the house is left without a foundation. It will soon come to ruin. And take away Christ and all our labor is sowing without reaping the harvest. We are left only with a field full of weed to show for our life's work. Jesus is both the beginning and the end, and everything in between for us.
