Genesis 15 follows Abram's victory in chapter 14, and his refusal to enrich himself from questionable sources. Abram wants God's blessing or no blessing at all. No wonder, then, God says to Abram in 15:1 "Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great." But this wasn't what Abram wanted. "O LORD GOD, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?…Behold, you havew given me no offspring…"

Abram and his wife Sarai were well-beyond their child-bearing years. What they had most wanted all their life, what God did not provide for them, was now utterly beyond their reach. But it is here that God gave Abram a promise. "Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them … So shall your offspring me." If these words had been spoken by a mere man, Abram would have been right to laugh and ignore. But Abram knew that God is true and his promises will not fail. Thus "he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness."

God considered Abram's trusting faith as righteousness. But, so what, we may obejct. What does one man's very unique experience have to do with us? The New Testament actually answers this question for us. In the New Testament Abraham is considered the father of all who believe. And God counts every man and woman who believes in his promises as righteous and they are called Abraham's true child and heir.

We face much hardship in life and we also struggle inwardly. Our souls often feel crushed and fractured. We struggle to find joy. Perhaps we also live with an ache like Abram. But faith makes us whole. No, faith is not some magical spell that cures all our ills. Rather, faith means believing God's promises, and hearing him say to us, "You are whole and well-pleasing in my eyes."
