Have we done enough for God? Have we given him enough?
We convince ourselves that what we bring to the Lord is enough. We even have the audacity to take issue when God rejects our offering. Not so fast! God requires internal righteousness. Therefore we are in no position to demand that God be content with the very inadequate offerings we bring. We are very much like Cain. When God had no regard for Cain and his offering, he became angry. But if he had done well, he would have been accepted.
Well, we have not done well. God demands true righteousness from his worshippers, and that is a deficit no amount of our own sacrifice can erase. Not with thousands of rams. Even if we were to offer our firstborn could we erase that deficit of righteousness, for failing to do justice, to love kindness, to walk humbly with our God. Thus Micah 6:6–8 leaves us desperate for an answer. How can we come before God? With what gift shall we come?
Praise the Lord! God has opened for us a straight and smooth path into his presence. For God has provided for us One who has done justice, who loved kindness, and who walked humbly with his God. God has given us Jesus. Jesus is our straight and smooth path into God’s presence. For we are by faith united to Jesus, and we approach God in the person and merit of our savior. Thus the gift we bring to God is our trusting faith that relies on Jesus. The gift of our firstborn to God would not have been nearly enough. But God gave us his firstborn Son and has opened wide the gates of heaven for us.
