Our Lord Jesus taught his disciples to pray "And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil." This prayer is how godliness is worked out in every day life. Naturally, we should not be surprised to discover that godly people have always made it a part of their daily prayer. For example, David's prayer in Psalm 16 embodies the same godliness and wisdom. "Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge." Thus throughout Psalm 16 David prays to be guarded against from thinking that there is some greater or higher good than God himself, which is the very power of temptations we face. "I say to the LORD, "You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you."" And "The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance."

This godliness grows in the company of like-minded people. "As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight." Godly people are drawn to other godly people. That is, if you want to be godly, then seek out godly people. Of course, we are not surprised. Proverbs 13:20 says "Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm." That is, we are not going to be kept from temptation or be preserved in isolation. Godliness is a corporate undertaking.

Godliness also points us to Christ. Peter famously quoted this psalm in Acts 2:22–31 to proclaim Jesus' resurrection from the dead. For Jesus is the one (the only one) of whom it may be said truly and fully, "I have set the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken … For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption. You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore."

So every day we must ask the question and learn to answer without hesitation. Is Jesus right or is he wrong? Does Jesus speak the truth or does he lie? Is Jesus right to say to the LORD "I have no good apart from you"? Can you say with Jesus that the saints "are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight?" We will grow wise and godly as we walk with the Wise and the Godly One, Jesus Christ.
