Psalm 8 begins and ends with the same refrain, "O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!" And in between verses 1 and 9, we discover the reason why sing of the LORD's majesty. First, God has ordained "babies and infants" — the very picture of helplessness and weakness — to answer the proud rebellion of this world's powerful, "to still the enemy and the avenger." After all, "…the weakness of God is stronger than men." (1 Corinthians 1:25)
David then next considers the vastness of the universe. Today, of course, we have academic disciplines and scholars devoted to study the vastness of the universe. Sadly, they frequently come away from their studies with a kind of nihilism. They wonder, How can life have any meaning when we are inconsequential dust living on an insignificant planet in an ocean of galaxies? But David reaches a different conclusion. "When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?" The so-called wisdom of man leads the modern man to despair. But what they consider to be foolishness, God's revelation, leads us to see God's loving care over us. "For the foolishness of God is wiser than men…" (1 Corinthians 1:25)
Indeed, what, and who, is man that God so cares for him? Who is he that was made "a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor"? Who is he that is given "dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet…"? The New Testament answers these questions clearly and unequivocally. "For God has put all things in subjection under his feet…" (1 Corinthians 15:27). Paul, of course, means Christ. For Jesus is the foolishness of God which is wiser than men, and the weakness of God which is stronger than men.
Psalm 8 is often read with the goal of establishing mankind's dominion over God's creation. True and biblical as it may be, this question occupies a distant second place in the order of importance. For the question of utmost importance is this: Does the Lord Jesus Christ have dominion over us? And do we joyfully submit to his dominion that we can sing with the psalmist? Indeed, may we all sing with joy "O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!"
