Psalm 95 calls God's people to an exuberant worship. It is easy to see the reason why. Perhaps you have seen people marooned on top of their cars in the middle of a flash flood. And just when all hope seems lost, some brave people jump into the raging water and pull them out. Can you imagine the joy on the face of the rescued? Can you picture with what exuberance they welcome their rescuers? Indeed, you will not find the look of disinterested apathy on their faces, but sheer joy and gladness. Or, again, picture yourself stuck in the middle of wild fires with no way to escape. Just as the walls of fire close in on you, a helicopter appears above and down comes a brave soul who puts the harness around you and pull you out of the fire. You will feel many emotions sweeping over you, except boredom!

Now we can understand Psalm 95. "Oh come, let us sing to the LORD; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!" This is how saved people welcome their Savior. Not with halfhearted apathy, not begrudgingly, but eagerly and joyfully we worship our great God and redeemer.

The joy of worship, however, is not only rooted in the past. "Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker! For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand." Dogs wag their tails with gladness when their master brings them food. Sadly, sometimes we have less sense than our dogs. The LORD is the good and faithful shepherd who cares for his flock. He daily provides for us and keeps us safe. Surely, we ought to draw near him with great joy.
