Why should we be glad and rejoice that the Lord is King? The reason is simple. The alternative to the Lord's reign as king is not greater freedom and equity for mankind, but suffering the wrath of petty tyrants. Be they kings of great nations or a neighborhood bully, power is easily corrupted and the powerless suffer.

But the Lord's sovereignty is all together of a different kind. Psalm 97 tells us "The LORD reigns, let the earth rejoice; let the many coastlands be glad! Clouds and thick darkness are all around him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne." "Clouds and thick darkness" hide God's counsel and befuddle the plans of the would-be usurpers of God's throne. For, surely, God's throne rests securely on the foundation of "righteousness and justice." And in comparison to the immovability of God's throne, even the most imposing mountains are nothing, for "The mountains melt like wax before the LORD, before the Lord of all the earth."

Psalm 97 thus appropriately calls the believer to action. "O you who love the LORD, hate evil!" This is a costly discipleship in a world that is, seemingly, ruled by tyrants, and God's counsel is hidden even from our view. But the LORD promises help. "He preserves the lives of his saints; he delivers them from the hand of the wicked." The LORD reigns. So we trust, persevere, and worship. "Light is sown for the righteous, and joy for the upright in heart. Rejoice in the LORD, O you righteous, and give thanks to his holy name!"
